Systems, authority, and the conditions for potential

I build the systems, and the trust, that let people reach their potential.

I've done it in an engine lab, a telecoms network, and a disaster zone. The lesson never changes: people thrive when they are given the authority to act. Today I run HELP Logistics, a program of the Kühne Foundation. Forty-one people across six offices, Singapore to Senegal.

Positions

Positions, argued from practice

A folded map with two location pins standing on it, lying beside a signed document with a wax seal and a fountain pen
Proximity

Proximity is not power.

What I said about localization at the DG ECHO Leadership Group Meeting in December 2025, what I meant by it, and the five things I will not argue for.

Localization

Localization is a legitimacy problem, not a capacity problem.

Sixteen interviews, 264 coded references, and a driver who designed a security protocol that outperformed correct procedure.

Decisions

The scarcest resource is decision quality under constraint, not funding.

A wrong decision has a name attached to it. A slow one does not, which is why organizations produce slow ones in perfect good faith.

Order

Organizations optimize for the appearance of order over clarity of action.

Order is legible to funders and auditors. Clarity of action is not. The hiring test that made the difference cost an afternoon.

Pathways and Power

Who decides?

Not who is accountable. Who can say yes or no without asking.

Whose name is on it?

Who is credited, who presents the work, whose expertise the record shows.

What holds that in place?

The funding, the compliance regime, the governance framework.
